Peter Jakob Kuhn- Riesling "Quarzit" Oestrich Trocken 2021 750ml (12.0% ABV)
we love their blanc de blancs bubbly, now try their impressive dry Riesling, drinks like a mini-Grosses Gewachs
Village level wine from multiple parcels Doosberg, Lenchen and Klosterberg with loam rich soils laden streaked with shimmering grey quatzite lending a concentrated minerality and focused structure. The 2021 vintage is all citrus peel, white peach and fennel over lifted acidity, faint ocean spray salinity and prancing minerality. Still childlike in it's youth, this is one to sock away for several years to reveal it's structure and profoundly layered chiffon fruit/mineral

"The 2021 Oestrich Riesling trocken Quarzit displays an intense golden-yellow color followed by an intense and concentrated bouquet with fine phenolic notes. Pure and enormously vital on the palate, this (is) a long and tensioned, tight and textured Riesling from Oestrich. Fascinating again. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022." -Wine AdvocateÂ
"Peter Jakob Kühn's biodynamically certified wines always show an extraordinary fidelity to site and vintage, and this Ortswein from Oestrich is no different. Grown on quartzite soils with loess and loam cover, the grapes spent seven hours in the press cycle before being sedimented overnight. Just 20% was fermented in barrel, the rest in stainless steel, all spontaneously. The wine is of an easy, mellow mildness with lots of ripe, juicy but mouthwatering apple fruit and a lovely texture. The finish is zesty in spite of the mildness
Certified Biodynamic and Organic. Hand-harvested from several sites including Doosberg, as well as Lenchen and Klosterberg, meaning all deeper, more generous soils that lie atop quartzite, with good water availability. Vine-age between 7- and 56 years-old. Fermentation is spontaneous with natural yeasts.Â
Situated in the historic Rheingau on the right banks of the river Rhine, the Khn Estate has been a cornerstone of German wine-making for roughly 230 years and has been passed down through 11 generations. Having grown into a 20 hectare estate, Peter Bernhard along with his wife Viktoria, his parents Peter Jakob and Angela, as well as his sister Sandra continue to both preserve the established traditions of their ancestors and to pursue modern viticultural techniques. In 2004 they made the decision to achieve certification as an organic and biodynamic winery. The belief and expectation of quality wine manifests itself in their memberships in the VDP (Prdikat Wine Estates), Demeter, and "La Renaissance des Appellations". The result is a collection of exquisite and well-defined rieslings.
"The Quarzit bottling from Peter Bernhard Kühn comes from a few parcels in the village of Oestrich, with the soils here a combination of gravel, loess-loam and quartzite. There are some young vines included in this cuvée, but the oldest vines in the blend are closing in on sixty years of age, so this is no young vine bottling. delivers a beautiful bouquet of apple, breadfruit, a complex base of soil tones, very delicate floral tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with a lovely core, plenty of minerality, excellent acids and a long, complex and very classy finish. This is fine, fine juice. 2021-2055"
