The historic Maximin Grünhaus estate lies at the foot of a long, steep south-facing slope on the left bank of the tiny Ruwer river, about two kilometers upstream from where it joins the Mosel.

We adore this new addition to the shop.

introduced in 2014 as a throwback blend of all the different parcels of the estate, extremely drinkable and versatile.

While the style and price point of this new edition are decidedly old school, the packaging and the inspiration for Maximin are thoroughly modern, reflecting the vision of the very talented Maximin Von Schubert.

The viticultural history at this famed Ruwer estate is old, really old! By the time of Emperor Otto (successor of Charlemagne), their status as a winery had been documented. But even the von Schubert family was astounded when archaeologists discovered their building foundations were originally laid as part of a Roman road. This, coupled with Roman pruning shears and amphorae dug up in the vineyards, brings their wine history back another 500 years!!

Down in their ancient cellar, wines ferment spontaneously with only ambient yeast — a rarity in Germany these days. These native yeast strains are key: Maximin von Schubert attributes the wines’ singular flavor profile and incredible quality at least in part to the flavors they help develop.

This is wine that is equally at home on it’s own as aperitif or paired with a whole range of non-traditional (in German terms) dishes

almost fizzy its so vibrant, sea-breeze and gooseberries, just a touch of sweetness, tangerine, peach, medium bodied, Stony and flinty aromatics are given over to notes of citrus zest and white flowers. tropical and stone fruit, and notes of grilled pineapple depth, offering a simple sipping pleasure.  Green apple and kiwi linger on the finish.
