Diego Losada creates soulful Mencia via small, rented parcels of old bush vines. These sites are isolated, farmed organically, and yields are kept to a minimum. In the cellar there are no pumps, no stainless steel (unlined concrete is preferred or neutral oak), and no additions to the wines.
Vindemiatrix is the gateway into the fascinating world of La Senda. It is sourced from 7 old-vine parcels in the hills surrounding the village of Hervededo. Most of the parcels are red and white grapes inter-planted, so Diego co-ferments the different native grape varieties, as was done in the past. The soils are mainly clay-calcareous, and the elevation is around 550 meters.
Wow, Yum. Enticing nose., lean blood red, anise spice, good grip, tart red fruits, mouthwatering, nuttiness, smoke, spice, figs and plums in the finish. A steal. Great with a slight chill.
