Burgstall site is granite and gneiss plateau with sandy topsoil. Located between the valley and the foothills, this site rises to 30-40 meters, with all-day sun exposure but good ventilation due to altitude.... The Burgstall vineyard refers to a crag bedrock plateau towering & bordering on Unterloiben to the east. The name goes back to a small fortification that was built in the Middle Ages to defend livestock against pillages and the site was first mentioned in a document in 1248. It is also assumed that the first settlement “Liupna” was located here, from which the village name Loiben may derive.

dry & complex Riesling to enjoy now (with a quick decant) or cellar for another 10 years

FX Pichler is known as the king of Gruner Veltliner, but his highly concentrated Rieslings and his Sauvignon blanc are equally famous and will age very happily for many years, if not decades. Pichler shares a distrust of very reductive vinification and high technology with other Wachau growers, believing that these would make his wines too uniform. He ferments them in large wooden barrels and leaves them there for about six months. selected yeasts are only used for the first consignment of must; after that, natural yeasts take over.
