While most famously celebrated in Argentina, Malbec has French origins - typically used in smaller percentages in Bordeaux blends. However, Malbec is the star in Cahors - a winegrowing region 100 miles east of BDX. This great example is 70% from limestone plateau (resulting in lighter, fresher Malbec), and 30% from iron/gravelly terraces (which creates a richer denser Malbec). Pascal Verhaeghe and his brother, Jean-Marc, bring a welcome refinement to the wines of picturesque southwest France. No chemicals used on estate since 1992. 91 points Wine Spectator. Terroir-driven and elegant, from one of the top producers in Cahors. Spicy black fruits, cassis & plums, smoke, violets, dark chocolate, lush with well-integrated tannin and hints of leather on the finish. Enough fruit and structure to pair with almost any meal, from charcuterie to rack of lamb to beef tacos.
