One of the few estates in Germany to be certified biodynamic, the conversion was gradual and started at home: unhealthy food was banned – no white sugar, white flour or processed foods of any kind. While this is nearly always the lightest and most structured of the E\u0026amp;M Pinots, in 2022 this is perhaps the most seductive and deep-fruited I’ve ever tasted. The palate is awash with black cherry, blackberry finely woven around leather, dried herbs, sap and forest notes. The lush and coating palate is brought into focus by a persistent acidity and an ultra-fine tannic grip, that’s almost surprising given the suave beginning. Hans Josef says “the Rödchen is closer to Walkenberg… it is more…” and then he makes a curious gesture with his hand, where it’s a fist that opens and then he shakes it around as if he’s writing a short note to a friend in the air.
